Amy Scully, MSW, LMSW

IAmy Scully(1) believe that behind every problem lies the powerful desire for something better. As a licensed
psychotherapist who has been married for
nearly 30 years and raised three children, I know well the painful chapters that are part of long-term intimate partnership, the challenges of parenting, of balancing work and home life

Like most families, my own large, close, extended family has struggled to absorb the shocks of episodes of mental and emotional disorder – addiction, ADHD, anxiety, depression, paranoia, psychosis. My mother’s journey through Alzheimer’s disease especially the time she and my father spent living with me, my husband and children has deeply shaped my understanding of loss and the impact of mental illness on the entire family system

My Approach

I use research-based therapies that offer practical methods and skills that build emotional flexibility, self-awareness and resilience.  Many of my clients are working to become free of self-defeating patterns resulting from emotional neglect in early or adolescent development. My typical client is intelligent and responsible as well as anxious and stressed, lonely, depressed or angry

As a therapist you will find in me someone you can count on to listen with depth and sensitivity – reflecting, probing, questioning and guiding – nurturing your ability to respond to suffering and hardship with skill, insight and purpose. You can learn more about my approach at my website

My Training

My undergraduate study was at Vanderbilt University and my graduate work was at the University of Georgia where I completed a Master of Social Work with specialty certification in marriage and family therapy. I have worked in a range of clinical settings including emergency psychiatric services, inpatient crises stabilization and domestic violence crises services. In addition to my academic degrees I have earned advanced training in a range of therapeutic practices and models including Emotionally Focused Couple’s Therapy (EFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Non-violent Communication and Inner Relationship Focusing

My Specialties

The couples I see are struggling with high conflict and tension as well lonely alienation – feeling misunderstood, angry and hurt. Some are separated, in the midst of divorce or are shattered by an affair. Others want to rekindle the spark, rebuild communication, trust and intimacy

Much of my work with individual clients also is focused on creating and sustaining fulfilling relationships. Many clients are experiencing a crises – a betrayal, abandonment or breakup. Others are facing problems with living like low self-esteem, loneliness, blocks to intimacy, a pervasive sense of powerlessness or aggression. I also work with families, adolescents and adults experiencing serious mental health symptoms including clinical depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, addiction, suicidality, urges for self-harm and trauma. I am licensed as a Master of Social Work Counselor, GA # MSW006599r
